Having dominated the European endurance circuits with their 4.5 liter 917, Porsche decided to take their trusted warhorse across the Atlantic, to do battle with the nearly unlimited sports racers of The Canadian-American Challenge Cup, or Can-Am. Previous experiments in this series showed that the 640HP, 4.5 liter, naturally aspirated flat-12 was underpowered compared to the 7 liter V8's run by the majority of Can-Am teams. In response to this, Porsche's engineers went to work and this is what they created: the 917/30 spyder. Porsche started with the engine, taking their already proven 4.5 liter flat-12 and punching it out to 5.4 liters, then, for that little extra something they added twin exhaust driven turbochargers. The result, 1,500+ Horsepower, the most powerful sports racing car ever built. Due to its relatively low weight of 1800lbs (816kg) the acceleration was simply brutal. 0-60mph in 1.9s, 0-100mph in 3.9s, 0-200mph in 10.9s and a top speed of over 260mph, on paper, at least, this looks incredible. But if the figures are impressive, the on track performance is equally mind boggling. With his aptly nicknamed "Turbo Panzer" Mark Donahue crushed his competitors in Can-Am, winning all races but one in 1973 and securing the drivers trophy for himself and bragging rights for team owner Rodger Penske and Porsche. Sadly this is the car that many say killed the Can-Am, its dominance, coupled with its savage thirst for fuel during the OPEC Oil Crisis, caused new fuel restrictions to be enforced for 1974, and finally to a close in 1975. However, Penske and Donahue gave this glorious machine a fitting send off. In 1975 they took this car to Talladega and broke the FIA closed circuit speed record, averaging 221.16mph around the banked tri-oval. A fitting farewell to the most powerful, and ludicrous sport car ever built.
